A centre-pivot window rotates around a horizontal axis roughly in the middle of the frame, which means the top swings into the room while the bottom swings out, and the whole sash can be turned almost fully around for cleaning the outer pane from indoors. This makes it a practical, low-maintenance choice, though it does mean part of the open window projects into the room while it's open.
A top-hung window is hinged at the top and opens outward at the bottom, similar to how a normal wall-mounted window works. It tends to feel more natural to operate when it is within easy arm's reach, and because it doesn't rotate into the room it can suit lower-level installations better, with less risk of catching furniture or a bed frame.

As a general rule, centre-pivot windows work well higher up a slope or out of easy reach, since they can still be opened and cleaned safely using the standard control bar or an extension pole.
