These three terms get used almost interchangeably by homeowners, which is understandable since they all sit in the same small area of the roof, but each one actually does a different job. Knowing which is which makes it a lot easier to describe a problem accurately when you're asking for a quote.
Fascias – The Vertical Board
The fascia is the vertical board that runs along the edge of the roof at gutter height, capping off the ends of the rafters and giving the guttering something solid to fix onto. It's the part you notice most, since it's the flat surface facing outward that you see when you look up from the street, and it's usually the first thing to show visible signs of wear.
Soffits – The Underside Panel
The soffit is the panel fitted underneath the fascia, running horizontally to close off the gap between the wall and the edge of the roof where the rafters would otherwise be exposed. Many soffits include ventilation, either as small round vents or a perforated strip, which allows air to circulate into the roof space and helps prevent condensation building up in the loft.
Because soffits face downward rather than outward, they're easy to overlook during a quick glance at the house, but they're just as important to check for cracking, sagging or gaps as the more visible fascia above them.
Guttering – The Separate System
Guttering is a different system entirely, it's the channel fixed to the fascia that catches rainwater running off the roof tiles and directs it down through downpipes, away from the walls and foundations. It's fixed to the fascia rather than being part of it, which is why fascia damage so often causes guttering problems too, once the board behind it weakens, the gutter has nothing solid to hang from.
Brunel Roofing Bristol works on all three together, fascias, soffits and guttering, since getting them right as a set is what actually keeps a roofline weathertight.
