Felt Roofing
Traditional built-up felt remains a popular, budget-friendly choice, particularly for smaller roofs like sheds, garages and extensions. Modern high-performance felt systems have improved significantly on older versions, though felt generally has a shorter lifespan than the alternatives and can be more prone to cracking with age and UV exposure. GRP Fibreglass Roofing
GRP, or fibreglass, roofing is applied as a liquid that cures into a single, seamless, rigid surface, which makes it particularly good at resisting the kind of splits and cracks that trouble ageing felt. It handles foot traffic well, comes with strong guarantees when properly installed, and has become one of the most popular choices for domestic flat roofs in recent years.
It's also fully waterproof from a single application with no joints to fail, which is part of why it's often specified on roofs with a more complex shape.
Single-Ply Membranes (EPDM and Similar)
EPDM and other single-ply rubber membranes are supplied in large sheets with very few joints, making them highly durable and well suited to larger roof areas. They tend to sit at the higher end of the price range but often reward that with a long service life and low maintenance needs. Colour options are more limited than with felt or GRP, but for anyone prioritising longevity and minimal upkeep over appearance, that's rarely a deciding factor.
