Seeing puddles sitting on your flat roof a day or two after the rain has stopped is a common concern, and rightly so, because standing water is one of the biggest contributors to premature roof failure. There are a few likely explanations worth understanding.

Insufficient Falls in the Roof Structure

A properly built flat roof isn't actually flat at all, it's built with a slight fall, typically around 1 in 40, so water naturally drains towards outlets or gutters rather than sitting still. If that fall is too shallow, was never built in correctly, or has settled unevenly over time, low spots form where water collects and simply has nowhere to go. A fall this shallow is easy to miss by eye, which is why pooling can come as a surprise even on a roof that looks reasonably level.

Blocked or Undersized Drainage

Even a well-built roof will pool water if its outlets, gullies or gutters are blocked with leaves, moss or general debris, which is a particularly common issue in Bristol given the amount of rainfall the city sees through autumn and winter. Outlets that are simply too small for the roof area they serve can cause the same problem even when they're perfectly clear.

In areas with mature trees nearby, leaf fall in autumn can block an outlet within a matter of weeks if it isn't checked regularly.

Why It's Worth Sorting Out

Standing water adds constant weight and pressure to the roof covering, accelerates wear, and increases the chances of it finding a weak point to leak through. If puddles are a regular sight on your roof, it's worth having it looked at, sometimes the fix is as simple as clearing an outlet, while in other cases additional falls or a partial re-lay are needed to solve the problem properly.

Left unaddressed for long enough, ponding water can also encourage moss and algae growth, which further slows drainage and adds to the problem.
